This is where keeping a 3′ 9″ mutated crab will get you…
...when someone accidentally shoots the latch off its holding pen. In any case, I'm always looking to pass along any ammo conserving tips I discover to fellow vault survivors (especially to those trying to survive on higher difficulty modes). Thicket Excavations is my next destination - a place rife with dank smelling concrete, a long winding path peppered with Raiders, and at the basin the bastard named Sully Mathis who paid me a lot of caps to help him drain the quarry (which evidently was code for help him establish a base of operations from which his crew can launch raids against passing traders and caravans). Oh, uh, spoiler alert. Well, I tend to repay betrayal in kind (he mentioned spelunking, not robbery), so watch the following vid to see how I took him down with a single .38 round.
As is usually the case with these types of tips you are trading the chance to earn a bit of experience for the chance to conserve ammo since you're not doing enough damage to Mathis to earn the exp; however you are not only conserving ammo, but also any aids you might have used during the fight (stimpaks come to mind). The mirelurk will also most likely kill one or two Raiders who are also down in the basin, so win-win.
Just heed my warning and do NOT shoot the latch open on the second pen (the larger one) unless swimming with Mirelurks is your idea of a fun time.
